02 / The roadmap

A multi-decade roadmap, four foundational pillars

The SRRC roadmap charts the long-term scientific path from microgravity reproductive research to human conception, pregnancy, and birth beyond Earth. Includes Earth-spinoff applications.

02a / Foundational pillars

Four interconnected pillars

The roadmap systematically organizes immediate actions and long-term milestones across four interconnected pillars, each indispensable to a coordinated global research effort.

02b / Scope of v1.0

From germline to early embryonic development

The inaugural framework deliberately constrains its focus to the most foundational and vulnerable stages of the reproductive continuum, before pursuing clinical pregnancy pathways.

  1. Covered in v1.0

    Germline & gametes

Precursor germline cells, oocyte maturation, sperm motility under microgravity and cosmic radiation.

  2. Covered in v1.0

    Fertilization

Conception in microgravity, in vitro fertilisation systems engineered for spaceflight constraints.

  3. Covered in v1.0

    Pre-implantation embryo

Early cleavage stages and synergistic effects of microgravity and cosmic radiation on cell differentiation.

  4. Future scope, v2+

    Pregnancy & birth

Outside v1.0 scope. Addressed as the consortium matures and biomedical evidence accumulates.

  5. Future scope

    Childhood & adulthood

Long-term lifecycle in space. Childhood development and ageing process largely unstudied to date.

02c / Earth spinoffs

Dividends for Earth-bound medicine

Research enabling reproduction in space delivers direct benefits on Earth, accelerating profound innovations in clinical fertility and reproductive healthcare.

02d / Future iterations

Beyond v1.0, the full life-cycle ahead

Version 1.0 deliberately constrains its focus to the foundational gamete-to-birth stages. Future iterations of the roadmap are expected to expand its scope, encompassing the complete continuum of human reproduction beyond Earth and introducing additional pillars currently outside v1.0.

Contribute to the next iteration.

The roadmap is intentionally iterative. Symposium 2 in 2026 will sharpen the v1.0 priorities into measurable workstreams, and the consortium continues to welcome new founding partners across science, technology and ethics.
