02 / Why this matters now

Humanity is moving outward. Reproduction stays unsolved.

Sustained scientific progress and long-term exploration make it increasingly important to invest in shared, forward-looking scientific goals. As humanity moves toward increased commercial presence in space, scientific lunar bases, and future missions to Mars, long-term settlement beyond Earth is gradually emerging as a discussed long-term horizon.

Within this context, the question of reproduction becomes increasingly relevant. Permanent settlements beyond Earth would depend on safe ways to conceive and raise children in space. Yet despite decades of human spaceflight, no conception has occurred in orbit, and systematic research into this domain remains at an early stage.

03 / Four foundational pillars

An integrated, multidisciplinary architecture

Reproduction in space cannot be approached as an isolated biological challenge. It is approached as a systems-level challenge that integrates four interconnected pillars, each with its own deliverables, partners and timeline within the Roadmap Foundations. Across these pillars, the roadmap addresses the full reproductive continuum: natural conception, implantation, pregnancy, fetal development, birth, assisted reproduction, and potential future reproductive technologies. The early laboratory studies of the Foundations phase are its first building blocks toward that continuum.

  1. 01 Biomedical Science

    Gametogenesis & embryo development under microgravity

    In vitro models and mammalian proxies provide the earliest building blocks toward clinical pregnancy pathways, within a continuum that spans conception, implantation, pregnancy and development. Build a high-fidelity evidence base on how gametes, embryos and pregnancy respond to partial gravity, microgravity, radiation and circadian stress.

  2. 02 Space Systems & Reproductive Technologies

    Enabling space systems and biological support technologies

    Development of enabling space technologies and biological support systems addressing the full human reproductive cycle beyond Earth, including radiation mitigation, gravity simulation, life-support systems and advanced reproductive biotechnologies.

  3. 03 Ethics & Legal

    A unified Space Bioethics Code of Conduct

    Mitigate jurisdictional ambiguity among commercial space actors and govern advanced biotechnologies proactively. Embed informed consent, reproductive rights and the rights of future children at the center of every protocol.

  4. 04 Business & Geopolitics

    Hybrid funding and equitable collaboration frameworks

    Philanthropic, venture and crowdfunding instruments alongside public funding. Prevent monopolization of foundational reproductive technologies and design IP that keeps fertility-care accessible across nations and income brackets.

For the first time in history, humanity possesses the technological agility, commercial momentum, and scientific tools necessary to ethically and systematically address the fundamental question of our ability to reproduce beyond Earth.

04 / Symposium 01 · Sep 2025

35 experts. One roadmap. What they agreed on, September 2025

The inaugural symposium identified the major knowledge gaps that govern reproductive biology in space: partial and microgravity, radiation, and disrupted circadian rhythms. It also underscored the urgency created by upcoming space tourism and long-duration missions, where both planned and unplanned pregnancies could occur.

Interdisciplinary working groups explored ethical frameworks, biomedical strategies, technological solutions and funding models. Beyond enabling space settlement, the roadmap is expected to generate significant benefits for reproductive medicine and maternal health on Earth.

Research that flies, medicine that lands

Addressing reproduction in the extreme environment of space accelerates terrestrial medical spin-offs.
